What does treatment actually cost?

The short answer

IUI cycles typically run in the hundreds to low thousands of dollars; IVF is commonly $15,000–25,000 or more per cycle including medication. The quoted price usually isn't the whole price.

What to know

  • Ask for the full line-item list: monitoring, anaesthesia, ICSI, freezing, storage, and medication.
  • Medication is often billed separately and varies a lot between people.
  • Storage fees recur annually and are easy to forget.
  • Ask what's refundable if a cycle is cancelled, and at which point that changes.
  • Multi-cycle and refund packages shift risk rather than reducing cost — read what triggers a refund.

Wide ranges, and the specific numbers depend on your clinic, your state, and your coverage. These are the questions to ask so you get your numbers, not averages.

Typical ranges (U.S.)

  • Initial evaluation: often a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars, depending on what's covered.
  • Medication with timed intercourse: low hundreds per cycle for oral medication plus monitoring.
  • IUI: commonly several hundred to a few thousand per cycle including medication and monitoring.
  • IVF: commonly $15,000–25,000 or more per cycle including medication; frozen transfers, PGT-A, ICSI, and storage are usually additional.

What to ask for

An itemized estimate for the recommended plan, including medication (often billed separately by a pharmacy), monitoring, procedures, anesthesia, lab fees, freezing and annual storage, and the policy if a cycle is cancelled at each stage. Ask whether multi-cycle packages or refund programs exist and what their fine print is.

Ways people pay

Insurance (coverage varies enormously by state and plan), employer fertility benefits (programs like Progyny, Carrot, or Maven), clinic financing, grants from organizations listed by RESOLVE, and, for some, treatment in a lower-cost region. Ask the clinic's financial counselor; that role exists for this.

What the guidance says

Not rated, deliberately. This is an administrative subject, not a clinical one, so there is no research to grade. Rules vary by plan and place — confirm what applies to you.
